{ How to Give Any Home Farmhouse & Cottage Charm with this Simple Guide..}

Heyyy everyone & welcome back to TQS! Thanks for popping back in on the blog today. Yesterday was one of those days where I just couldn't let things slide...{ if you seen my rant on IG } . I'm one of those people who can take a lot of things & just dust them off, but some things really get to me & I needed to voice them. Today though this post is all about how to achieve that ever so popular Farmhouse or Cottage charm around your own home. I've been into the cottage/ farmhouse look for quite sometime now & grew up around junkin', DIY, pickin', cottage life & being in northern Michigan which if you don't already know is known for this kind of charm. With being a practical home blogger I like to share simple tips for you guys so you can replicate or make your home cozy with these types of trends  in your own home. Come take a peek at a few things to get you that cozy charm..

 

1. Greenery

This is my go to obviously. Adding greenery is super simple, affordable & it can be used over & over in so many different ways. From wreaths to stems to buckets full & so much more. I get a lot of my flowers from thrifty spots & use them for years. You can see my post on the best cottage/farmhouse greenery HERE.

 

2. Wood. 

This is something I crave in our home all over. I'm not talking high-end, clear-coated or laminate big huge wood pieces either [ not that there is anything wrong with that style ]..I'm talking beat-up chipped, vintage rough style pieces. The older the piece, the more charm it will show..at least that is my motto ha. I love me a good chippy, rustic piece in our home. It adds that cozy appeal without even trying & most of the time you can find these pieces from garage sales to antique stores & even on garbage night..no shame here! It doesn't take a ton of money to add cozy cottagey charm.. The chippy frame below is one of my favorite finds that someone pitched!!

 

3. Metal.

This one can be confusing for people to grasp. Metal? Isn't that more for modern styles?!..Yes, but things like buckets, galvanized tubs etc.. can be super farmhousy & help achieve that look. Things like the galvanized tubs can be great for adding greenery, storing linens etc..

4. Linens/ Pillows

This is one I think a lot of people when decorating for this look overlook really often!! I mean it's one of the coziest ways to add this style & charm but it can be a bit tricky..I suggest looking on Etsy, Ikea or HomeGoods which offers a bunch farmhouse style pillows & linens now. I have a bunch of the large tie-style farm pillows I picked up at IKEA & HomeGoods. I've been ticking stripe obsessed for the last few months & surprisingly I have found many things at these types of stores..

5. Barn Doors

Barn doors are a given, but add SO MUCH character without even trying. We got our barn door as free find that someone was trying to get rid of on one of my husband's job sites...Original 1940's hardware & everything..This thing is massive & resides in our dining room. It gives a great separating to the lower level & adds warmth in the dining. Just about any hardware store is snow offering 

 5. Vintage Elements

Vintage elements like books, containers, milk cans, tobacco baskets, scales,crates & crocks are another super simple way to add charm without going crazy or spending a ton to achieve it. I also like sharing these types of easier ways to add charm without adding shiplap or subway tile etc..because let's face it not everyone lives in a owned home, so for apartment dwellers etc..these are easy & not so permanent ways to cozy things up.

6. Texture

Adding texture was something newer for me about 4 years ago...I have been around this style for years, but this was new..Adding things like Jute rugs can help achieve this without going overboard. If you don't like the jute style or can't afford them, no worries you can add things like burlap & baskets which is super affordable.

7. Slip covered Furniture

I've always been super into Pottery Barn furniture & my gram always had cloth furniture. When we would visit her up north it was so big & cozy & that's where my love for cloth slipcovered goods come from. Although kind of a pain compared to leather, they do make everything look cozier & you can get them for cheap now. I have a full post HERE

8. Signs

Old vintage signs are the easiest way to add that rustic vintage feel. I know they can be pricey, but so many places offer them now for cheap & the remakes are just as nice. I have some from all over & the real things & I love them equally.. .You can even get some at chains like Hobby Lobby now. We've come far people haha.

9. Antique Glass

This is one of the areas where I wasn't all into until recently.. I love vintage dishes but glass I wasn't super into. Then my love for mason jars, old bottles & jars stepped in haha..The mason jars & jam jars add so much to a dining room or kitchen space & again you can find these items just about ANYWHERE these days.

 

 

10. Neutral Walls/ Colors.

This is another given for most. Keep your rooms simple with fresh white paint, creams, tans & accents with distressed blacks, chippy greens & browns. Neutral color pallet is the easiest way t decorate & really show off the vintage/antique goods you're displaying.

{ Cottage Garden Greenhouse Inspired Fireplace Decor ]

Well that weekend just flew right by...We didn't do anything crazy or exciting & I'm perfectly fine with that. We both got caught up on some work, Mark worked on his work truck { if the season would ever get here } & I deep cleaned, staged & photographed today's post for you guys!! I was getting super bored with out fireplace mantel in our upper level living room & decided to "spruce" it up with some greenery, & a DIY I should have blogged haha & some treasures aka junkin finds!! I swear it's the weekends when you don't have anything planned that you get the most done. As the sun set in our little cottage living room today it reminded me how far we have come & how much in the next few months will be taking place... I truly hope when you come to my blog you feel at home & can picture doing & recreating spaces I share! We live in an average home, do average things & are probably even simpler than you can imagine. I want this to be a place where the everyday person can be inspired -practically - as I've branded myself + this blog. Anyways I wanted to get that out hehe..Come see more of today's space below!

 

Okay, so if you've been a longtime blog reader you would know that this  now" chalkboard" banner  was actually in our room hanging above our bed but looked completely different...I decided to chalk paint the back of it so I could write on it & use it in other spots. The original side is still the same untouched. I do this with a lot of my decor so it gets "double" use or when I'm bored hahah.

 

I wanted to incorporate some spring into the mantel, but without all the floral jazz etc.. I had this metal watering can that is supposed to be for the wall, but happen to fit perfectly right here. The wood slices stayed the same & the chippy green baskets I just filled with plain greenery!

 

I think the herb banner gave the fireplace a nice bold rustic cottagey look & bonus it's versatile. I wanted to share a bit of our current coffee table in these photos too, because something will be happening in this space soon..if our weather ever warms up!

 

Cozy layered flowers, buckets, greenery & lanterns...basically everything cottagey / farmhousy!

 

I'm on the hunt for something above the TV, but haven't found the right item yet..I'm trying not to buy as much, junk as much or pick as much since moving obviously is less stressful with less things...h a r d  not to,I know haha!! I hope you guys loved this space!!

{ Spring Inspired Cottage Kitchen + Dining Room Refreshes }

Happy Thursday, friends!! Thanks for swinging back by for another spring style refresh! I feel weird writing this because it's currently 35 degrees out, but at least it's sunny right? haha Anways, I wanted to share with you guys some inspiration for spring & I've been meaning to share our new tobacco baskets I snagged up at Cracker Barrel while vacationing last month! So, I wasn't planning on blogging as much as I'm showing today, but since returning from vacation I've been super relaxed & that tends to lead to being unmotivated { which isn't like me } because let's be honest I love what I do & hope you do too! I started yesterday out by deep cleaning the house & then the itch to switch stuff up a bit hit hahah..Yikes! I started by downsizing our dining room table into a breakfast nook look more & then hung the baskets & then moved into the kitchen area & refreshed our window/sink area with the fresh items! You guys know I like to keep it as simple & practical as possible, so only a few things were new & they were a great price..tobacco baskets 2 for under $30 etc.. After it was all said & done the refresh totally brightened my mood & it feels so much fresher! Now if only the perfect 70 & sunny weather could appear haha! Come see this cute little refresh with some new goodies below...

 

  

I cleaned out this cabinet { so dusty } & took away many of the pieces I had in it for a more clean bold look! You can see the post on why those black stem glasses are so sentimental to me HERE

 

 

 

I waited for the nearly perfect day to get a picture of the "Bed & Breakfast"  sign I blogged about HERE. It's super hard to photograph this dining space & I refuse to use artificial light unless it's a must. So needless to say I'm so happy it was somewhat decent lighting to capture it up there!!

This space has been blank for some time now & I removed this DIY banner from our room { new bedroom post coming soon } & stuck it right here...Don't laugh tooo hard at my writing..I ran OUT of chalk ahahahaha, was using  a little stub ha. See you guys I'm not always prepared, but I tried to make it work...I do love the banner & greenery here though. Little pops of items, make the biggest difference!

  

Having the table sized down for summer into a little breakfast nook look has refreshed this space x10!! Adding as much greenery & neutrals was also a wise choice for this space. The tobacco baskets brought this whole space together & added that simple rustic texture I crave in spaces!!! The baskets were on sale 2 for under $30 originally $50 & we got them in either Tennessee or Kentucky on our road-trip { blog post coming soon too }.

Side Note: Before I get e-mails about them not being centered or too high, Yes, I know that, but until we paint I had to use holes & cover a small spot.

 

 

 

 

This space needed a refresh too..I did away with the tall topiary plants that were on each side & replaced them with the vintage scales, plants & glass bottles! P.S. I cant wait to get more Mrs. Meyers!! Maybe the smell of summer scents will bring it sooner haha or heck I'll even settle for spring at this point!
